junk mail

a few days ago
my uncle (father's side, his youngest brother)
sent out an email to everyone in my family (and some other people i don't know)
talking about the USPS postage stamp representing the muslim holidays "EID"
it was forwarded from some guy who often sends him things that he often forwards to me
mostly they're dumb, sometimes somewhat insightful
and though i hate junk mail, i usually just let it slide
... but this one was all about how "real americans" should boycott the stamp
as it is a slap in the face to all of the "americans" who have died at the hands of the "vicious muslims"
after three days of no one else in the family responding
i wrote out a response and sent it "reply all"

when i woke up this morning there was a voice mail from my father
.. i avoided it a few hours
and when i listened to it
it just said "call me"
when i did
i was shocked that he said
"i wanted to tell you i read your email... and i'm proud of you. what you did was the right thing... and though i don't agree with everything you said, i admire that you did it and how you did it"

i was shocked.

Hey there Ken
sorry i have to do this in front of everyone, i just hit "Reply ALL"
but i didn't hear anything else from any of the rest of them
and i know i had to speak up to you once while sitting at a table with you telling "gay jokes"
so i guess i'm the one who has to shine a little light on this

This is Outrageous!
That's Right!

Ignorance is not funny. it doesn't make you stronger. and it doesn't make anyone respect you...
Despite what our current President might make you feel. Despite what current McDonald's ads are sympathizing with
provincial viewpoints and mocking/fearing/inciting hate about things you don't understand
it just shows that you are ignorant

seeing that we're using this wonderful Internet to send thoughtless forwards on from strangers to other strangers all the time
as well as to and from those we love and care for
i thought i'd also remind you that there are tons of different search options we can use to educate ourselves.
Yahoo has one. Google has one. there Altavista and Metacrawler. i'm sure AOL has one too.
when you get emails like this
that are meant to make you angry and afraid about something you do not understand
instead of forwarding it onto other people
ya know... spreading that ignorance around to the people you love
perhaps you should use one of the Internet's many free search engines
and try to better understand what it is you are ignorant, afraid and hateful of

about that stamp...
i copied this out of Wikipedia
The U.S. Postal Service issued a 34 cent stamp on the 1 Sep 2001 at the annual Islamic Society of North America's convention in Des Plaines, Ill. It features gold Arabic calligraphy on a lapis background that commemorates two of the most important muslim festivals: Eid ul-Fitr, marking the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, at the end of the pilgrimage to Mecca. During the festival, Muslims wish each other "Eid mubarak," the phrase featured on the stamp. "Eid Mubarak" translates into English as "blessed festival," and can be paraphrased as "May your religious holiday be blessed." This phrase can be applied to both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. This stamp was designed by the Islamic calligrapher Mohammed Zakariya.[4]

But you don't have to believe that
Wikipedia articles can be written by anyone
-- asked one of my friends here in the city and he said "yeah, well, they've been putting out an Eid stamp for years now... what's the big deal?"
fortunately there are millions of websites you can look through that will tell you things about World Religions

Christianity is not the only Religion in the world
Fortunately, America is not just one religion. we have freedom of religions here
Though Jesus was a really cool guy (i get mistaken for him every day)
most of his "followers" are ignorant and afraid and quote things from a book he didn't even write that's been translated so many times it's very easy to mis-interpret
they also selectively ignore other things the book says
like "Love Thy Neighbor" for instance, among many many other things.

Let it be known that the ONLY place i have EVER been in the world where every person i passed on the street in a HUGE CITY where people generally did not look away upon initial eye-contact was Istanbul (Constantinople under the old Empire that killed Jesus, by the way)
They, for the most part, ALL looked me in the eye and smiled
i FELT love
and Istanbul is %98 Muslim
Turkey, however, is a secular country, like the USA, and does not impose religion on anyone.

i've danced with muslims...

i've known american musilims who've had children die fighting for "our country" in Iraq

And when you think about all of the "Americans" who've died at the hands of these Vicious Muslim Terrorists
you may also nod your head to all of "Native Americans" who were killed by all the crazy european colonists who erradicated their way of life
women and children hunted and killed like animals, folks
and all of the africans who were brought here, to this wonderful country of ours, built it for us
and were raped, murdered and treated like . . .
well, you get the point.
Who's the Americans?
i know our families have mostly only been here for three or four Generations
does that make us more or less guilty?
or more Entitled to hate and fear people who have only been here one or two generations?
denying them their way of life
as ours had been when we fled our home lands?

and IF you believe that all Muslims are Terrorists
you might want to look into history and notice that Christianity has had just as many radical off-shoots as Islam
Irish terrorists groups citing religion as a political reason for killing people in buses all over england ireland
not to mention the Inquisition that killed thousands of people throught europe...
not to mention every culture throughout europe and the middle east that has been destroyed by "Christianity"
which, by the way, is NOT the movement Jesus started
but a political control structure created in Imperial Rome that co-oped the Jesus story as a good blanket tale to undermine the faiths of hundreds of unique world-views

fortunately, we don't live in a facist control state
and there are over 6 billion people on the planet
each with their own unique view for God to celebrate
who are not all being forced to think of Him (or Her, or Us) in one way

it will be nice to see all of you around the winter solstace
which happens to be a holy time in Every religion that's ever existed that i've ever known of

this year the Prayer i'm making is we can stop being afraid
of ourselves
and of eachother
and to be humble enough to ask about what we don't understand
and allow ourselves and eachother to grow in understanding and forgiveness

something else i'd like to share
if any of you are afraid of our New President
-- we will grow better together as a unified nation, not fighting ourselves...

From barack, "blessing" < Arabic مبارك (mubārak), "'blessed'") < بارك (bāraka), "'to bless'") < برك (báraka), "'to kneel'").

Proper noun

1. A male given name.

Husein, Hussein, Hossain, Hussain, Husain, Hosein, Husayn, Hussaini (Arabic:حسین Turkish: Hüseyin), is an Arabic name which is the diminutive of Hasan, meaning "good" or "handsome" or "beautiful". It is commonly given as a male given name among Muslims, in honor of Husayn ibn Ali (626-680 AD), although the name is so common it is also given to persons of secular backgrounds. In some Persian sources the form Háosayn is used [1].

So... What does "Obama" mean?
will have an answer for you.
